7:00 from Joelle: Small update. Jason has jackson trach now. :) said he got it around noonish today. Its stainless steel and has a plug. Still a size six though. What they will do is see how well he does with it plugged. See if he is able to swallow and cough. Make sure he won't aspirate. Then if all goes well after it being plugged they will pull it and he will finally be free of all that mess. And no more feeding tube either. Happy day for us when that happens! :)
He can drink water, and can basically eat most all foods now. Tonight we are going to watch a movie with our youngest and cuddle up in a bit heap on his bed. Been looking forward to tonight all day. When I walked in his room he had cheese cake waiting for me. I told him before that when he could eat I was going to bring him cheese cake. But he beat me too it.
6:53 from Teah (sister): This morning they were able to put the metal trach in that I talked about in my update on 8.21.08. After the metal trach was put in they strolled the ventilator out of Jason's room, that was a good thing to see leave the room. They are still doing cough assists, minimum, two times a day. A cough assist is a machine they use to pump air into his lungs that will break up the secretions and help get it out. Sometimes Jason requests for them to do it more than twice a day. He still has a lot of junk in his lungs and this helps to clear it out on a daily basis.
As far as his eating is concerned, there is nothing really new. He continues to be on a soft food diet but also has his feeding tube. He is able to feed himself using a strap around his hand and then putting the utensils under the strap to hold it in place; since he is not able to grip the utensils in his own strength.
Today Dad and Mom were able to take him outside in the wheelchair for a couple hours. During his outing he had to keep his feet up. If his legs get lower than his body, his blood pressure drops too low too fast. Every day we hope for a better day tomorrow.
